The evolution of metro systems in various global cities demonstrates how technology and innovation can enhance operational efficiency and user satisfaction, driving urban development.

Every major city reveals its intelligence through the way it moves people. The modernization of urban transportation infrastructure, especially the metro, is a crucial indicator of progress and innovation. In the United States, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) invested $166 million to modernize passenger rail infrastructure, aiming to replace obsolete vehicles and improve service reliability. According to the FTA, about one-third of the metro and passenger rail vehicles in the US are over 25 years old, contributing to delays and increased maintenance costs.

Washington DC’s Metro achieved 45 consecutive months of passenger growth and record customer satisfaction ratings, with 92% for Metrorail and 83% for Metrobus. These advances reflect the city’s commitment to modernizing its systems, providing exceptional service, and ensuring a positive impact on the region. The success is due to the dedication of staff, support from regional partners, and a commitment to meeting the needs of communities, according to Randy Clarke, General Manager and CEO of Metro.

In Lisbon, Portugal, the Metro has become a live laboratory for testing advanced fiber optics, increasing capacity up to seven times. With the support of the Regional Lisbon 2030 Program, the project, led by ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon, aims to promote urban innovation and collaboration between academia, the public sector, and the community. The underground innovation ring, running through tunnels and stations of the yellow metro line, positions Lisbon as a global technological reference. “We are creating a test balloon that can scale enormously, transforming Lisbon into a geographical and technological reference point,” says Jorge Rodrigues da Costa, vice-rector of ISCTE.

The South Central Extension / Downtown Hub of Valley Metro in Phoenix, Arizona, cost $1.34 billion and includes eight stations, a 110-space parking lot, and utility improvements. The project faced various challenges, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, unexpected utility conflicts, and blackout windows related to Super Bowl LVII. Despite these obstacles, the team maintained a mindset of overcoming, resulting in transformative infrastructure that connects south Phoenix to the city center. The lighting of the light rail bridge over the Salt River creates a visual connection between downtown and the south, as well as an architectural landmark that fosters local pride, as highlighted by Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego.

Urban resource management and the transformation of urban infrastructure are crucial aspects for sustainable development and improving the quality of life in large cities. The modernization of metro systems not only increases operational efficiency but also provides a more pleasant and secure experience for users. Technological innovations, such as advanced fiber optics and light rail bridge lighting, are concrete examples of how technology can be applied to improve urban infrastructure.

In Brazil, although there is no explicit link with these international projects, the modernization of urban transportation systems is equally relevant. Cities like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Belo Horizonte have invested in infrastructure improvements and technological innovation to address similar challenges. The exchange of experiences and the adoption of best international practices can accelerate the transformation and development of transportation systems in the country, promoting greater efficiency, safety, and user satisfaction.
